Mums twice as spoilt as spouses

Roses are red, violets are blue, I love my mum, more than you.

Mums across the country are set for a treat this Mothering Sunday as almost two-thirds (64%) of us admit to spending more on Mother's Day than on our partners for Valentine's Day. The research  was carried out by delivery company Yodel, which is gearing up to deliver twice the volume of flowers to mothers, than it did for Valentine's. Both men and women spend more on Mothering Sunday than on Valentine's Day.

Deliveries of gifts and flowers are set to soar this year as more than a quarter (28%) of us will postpone visiting our mother in person as it is too far, while a further one in ten of us (10%) highlight that petrol costs are too high, a figure that rises to 17% in the North East.

The figures show that we spend an average of £30 on our mums on their special day, with those in the East Midlands splashing over £50 and in the South West spending a more conservative £20. When it comes to the sexes, women dread disappointing their mothers (60%) more than men do (40%).

The amount spent on mums over spouses rises significantly in Scotland, where almost three-quarters (72%) of people claim to spend more for Mothering Sunday than Valentine's Day. It seems the older we get, the more we try to keep our mums happy, with two-thirds (66%) of those aged over 66 spending more on their mother.

Jonathan Smith, CEO of Yodel, comments on the findings: "It's heartening to see that mothers aren't missing out, even if we can't visit them to celebrate Mothering Sunday face to face. It's is a special day of the year and a chance to treat mums to a gift, which more and more people are doing online. Our drivers are gearing up to deliver thousands of bouquets to mums this weekend."

Yodel anticipates delivering more than 175,000 bouquets of flowers in the lead up to Mothering Sunday for its clients including Arena Flowers and SerenataFlowers.com - more than double the volumes of Valentine's (75,000 bunches). Yodel drivers will even be laying on a special Sunday delivery to ensure mums can receive their treat on the day itself.
