It's All Part and Parcel of the Job

We're delivering on cyber security

How Yodel are keeping you safe with our Cyber Security measures

Keeping people’s information safe is at the heart of what we do, whether that’s in our offices or in the hands of our delivery team. Any information that we keep is the most delicate item we handle, and our priority has always been to ensure our systems are designed to let you trust us to keep it safe. We’re always improving, and we want to tell you more about how we do it.

How does cyber security affect you?

Cyber Security is vitally important to everyone, as we increasingly rely on businesses to keep our information safe and secure. We all trust companies to keep that information safe, every day. But even well protected organisations can find themselves under threat. Cyber incidents can happen to anyone at any time. That’s why we want to be transparent about how we keep all the information that we handle protected, and why you can trust us to take the right steps to keep it that way.

How we handled our recent cyber incident

You may be aware that we recently suffered a cyber incident. Unfortunately, it’s something that happens to individuals and companies often. We don’t want to hide it, instead we’re here to tell you how we tackled it quickly, and how we’ve worked to ensure we’re further protected in the future.

Our team acted quickly to identify the security incident, and worked instantly to limit its impact. We brought in industry leaders to conduct a thorough, third-party investigation into how it happened. Thanks to our existing protocols, the impact was minimal, but that hasn’t stopped us from making immediate improvements.

We’ve strengthened our security to ensure that all information is even better protected than before. We’ve reviewed our approach and enhanced our processes and procedures in relation to information handling. In addition, our Chief Information Security Officer has implemented additional tooling that allows us to identify issues and react in real time, ensuring an enhanced security strategy.

Since the incident, we have been in regular correspondence with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which has confirmed to Yodel that it has decided not to take any regulatory action as a result of the incident, and considers its investigation into the matter now closed.

We were proud of the industry-meeting measures that we had in place. However, we want to assure our clients, customers, colleagues and suppliers that we are committed to the continuous improvement of our systems and platforms. Our three pillar approach to security keeps us resilient and safe. It starts with Prevention, with constant colleague training and monitoring that lets us spot potential criminal activity before it affects us. We continuously ensure our systems, tools and platforms are running smoothly and are managed well.

The second pillar is Impact. We have a robust and comprehensive plan in place to ensure any incident has a minimal impact on our service, and a comprehensive plan of action that gets our services back up and running quickly.

Finally, our Improved Recovery plan means we learn from any incidents, and use them to make our systems stronger, faster and better equipped in the future.

Our cyber security strategy for the future

Where do we go from here? We have used our recent cyber incident as a catalyst for investment in training and system upgrades. We’ve already added extra layers of security across our systems, and we’re continuing to enhance our protection, staff training, backup systems and continuity testing.

In addition, we’re enhancing our Cyber Incident Playbook that lets us shape our strategy for the future. We’re always evolving how we tackle ever-changing issues, and keeping one step ahead.

How to keep yourself safe

While we will always do everything we can to help ensure you’re safe, it’s important to be careful with your own information online. There’s some easy steps you can take to keep safe.

  • Only enter your information on websites you trust. Look out for the lock symbol, and https:// at the start of website names.

  • Use secure passwords for online accounts, and change them regularly. Try to use unique passwords for different logins, and never write them down where others can find them.

  • Be careful with public WiFi. When you’re browsing on open WiFi networks, your information may be more vulnerable. Use private internet connections for sensitive transactions.

  • Do security updates regularly. Don’t put off your device’s latest update for too long, it may contain vital security measures designed to keep you safe.

  • Back up your data, securely. If your device is lost or compromised, you may lose information that’s vital. Back all your vital documents up regularly to a secure cloud service or hard drive.

Do you think you might be at risk?
